CHAPTER

TEN

“He’s not gonnae show.”

Jack was leaning a beefy shoulder against a pillar in the low-ceilinged bar, his blue eyes trained on Gwen as she flicked the sweat off her bottle of ice-cold beer. Whether it was a genuine prediction or wishful thinking on Jack’s part, she didn’t know, but she would be willing to put money on Maris accepting her invitation. He was too curious to not want to know why he was being summoned by someone he viewed as a tourist. She could feel it in her bones.

“He’ll show,” she stated, taking a long swig of her beer. It bubbled against the back of her throat, the liquid gold immediately making her feel more refreshed than she actually was. Turned out the island of Siren’s Bay was sweltering, day or night.

“I hate to break it to you, love,” Jack said with swagger as he joined her at the small round table she’d commandeered. “But his kind are flighty and untrustworthy.”

“As opposed to your kind being steadfastly loyal?” Gwen shot back without a hitch, her brows raised in amusement. “Tell me again who those teeth marks in my dive vest belong to?”

Jack’s gaze darkened with guilt, and he looked away as he cuddled his glass of whiskey closer. He frowned, and Gwen followed his line of sight to see Maris, saving Jack from having to answer her uncomfortable question.

Maris walked through the bar with a quiet confidence that said a great deal about the type of man he was. Calm. Capable. Two things that were in direct opposition to Jack’s bravado and balderdash.

The pair of them were oil and water, and Gwen couldn’t believe she was trying to talk them both into a deal. The only way it could be more ludicrous was if she’d asked them to meet her in a rock pool, and she found herself sitting there in a couple feet of water with a great white and a merman.

Maris reached the table and raised a brow, nodding in turn at both people seated in front of him.

“Fleming.” His tone when addressing Jack was rough, like sandpaper. It didn’t improve much when his impossibly dark eyes turned on Gwen. “Ms. Lee.”

“You literally gave me mouth-to-mouth several times over in the span of ten minutes,” she said matter-of-factly, gesturing for Maris to take a seat. “Call me Gwen.”

He settled into one of the two empty chairs, looking between Jack and Gwen with suspicion. When neither of them spoke, his sleek dark brow inched higher.

“As cozy as this is,” he drawled, his Italian accent springing to the fore. “Does someone want to tell me why we’re all here?”

Another short silence. Gwen trailed a fingertip through the condensation on her bottle, summoning her gumption before she met the siren’s gaze. “You know why we’re here.”

Maris huffed a sarcastic, breathy laugh. “If you think I’m going to help you, then you’re mistaken.” He sat back in his wooden chair as if it were a throne of coral and sea sponge. “The ocean is wild, and wild she will stay.
